The pace is picking up
It took 38 years, from 1973 to 2010, to induct the first nine. It took 16 years, from 2011 to 2026, to induct the next ten. The 2010s and 2020s have each produced five so far.
Some milestones along the way:
- Mariano Rivera became the first player in history elected unanimously, in 2019.
- Dihigo, Torriente and Méndez were honored for their careers in the Negro Leagues, which MLB now recognizes as major league.
- Minnie Miñoso and Tony Oliva were elected together in 2022 by a Hall of Fame era committee, decades after their careers ended.
Who’s next?
The next big case is Albert Pujols, with 703 home runs and 3,384 hits. He first appears on the ballot in 2028. Venezuela’s Miguel Cabrera, with 3,174 hits and 511 home runs, would become the second Venezuelan in Cooperstown if elected.
Counts include players born in Latin America, as defined on our methodology page. Hall of Famers of Latino heritage born elsewhere, such as New York-born Edgar Martínez, who grew up in Puerto Rico, are not counted here.
